Testimonials

“Imogen was my acting technique teacher in both the ensemble course and audition masterclass at The Lir in 2024. Imogen’s training completely transformed me both as an actor and a person. When I met Imogen I was taking classes as a way to escape my busy life and do something I enjoyed but by the end of a term with her I had the belief in myself to pursue acting full time. I learnt so much about acting and life in the short time in her orbit, many of the lessons I think are still sinking in today. When I met Imogen I instantly felt the wealth of experience she carries, and she translates it into every class. Imogen is the best teacher I’ve had at balancing both kindness and challenge, as well as playfulness and seriousness. I’ve since worked with Imogen several times for coaching and each time I work with her I feel like I’ve grown exponentially. Working with Imogen was undoubtedly the best thing I ever did.”

Ciara Feely

Actors’ Ensemble + Audition Masterclass, The Lir Academy

“I met Imogen when I came to do the Actors Ensemble course at the Lir Academy in September 2024. There were 16 of us, from different walks of life and of different ages, and Imogen brought us all together, creating a safe and supportive atmosphere that would allow us all to be playful in trying new things and challenging ourselves. She taught us that our task was to ‘take care of each other and take care of the story’ and I thought it was such a simple and lovely way to emphasise the responsibility we have towards one another and towards the work. I’ve taken it with me to every rehearsal and performance I’ve done since. When I came to do the course, I was still second guessing myself about committing to acting professionally but, with Imogen’s encouragement, I applied to drama school and am now about to finish my first year of training. It’s a wonderful and rare thing to meet someone who sees your potential and helps you be braver with it than you would be on your own, and Imogen did just that for me.”

Jeanette Zhangal

Actors’ Ensemble, The Lir Academy

“I worked with Imogen during a monologue course designed for audition preparation in 2024. Throughout the course she was kind, attentive and extremely committed to finding out what form of direction and feedback worked for each person, learning which style served each student best and applying it seamlessly. This was my first time working on monologues and not once did I feel out of my depth or unsupported. Despite my initial nerves, by the end of the sessions I got to a point where I really enjoyed getting up and presenting my work to the class. Imogen created and fostered a safe and supportive atmosphere where each member of the group felt secure enough to explore and go outside of their comfort zones, ensuring that by the end of the course, everyone felt confident in their monologues and were ready to present them to a panel. Since this course, I have worked with several professionals in similar workshops, yet I truly feel as though Imogen’s approach was one of my favourites. Imogen has remained extremely willing to provide advice on any queries concerning auditions or acting since the course whenever I have reached out and I couldn’t be more grateful for her support over the past few years. I would have no hesitation in recommending the professional services which Imogen excels at.”

Lilas Bailey

Audition Masterclass, The Lir Academy

“Imogen is an incredible acting teacher and acting coach. I’ve had the pleasure to work with Imogen on several occasions (courses, group classes, 1:1 classes) and she is one of the most dedicated and inspiring teachers, who genuinely care to bring out the best in people. Her approach combines well structured classes, a caring yet challenging individual approach, tailored input and feedback as well as playfulness with a safe space to try things out. Imogen brings along a vast experience in stage and screen acting and performing arts and has made me understand different techniques from script analysis, building a character and truthfully performing in the moment in a way I’ve never been able to do before. So overall, I cannot recommend working with Imogen enough.”

Various courses, The Lir Academy + 1:1

“I’ve had two people significantly alter the direction of my life. The first was my university choir conductor who gave me a chance and pointed me towards a musical career, and the other was Imogen Doel. Imogen was a caring, open and patient teacher who met me where I was while giving me space to grow into, and was able to give the same for everyone in the class. I had heard about true listening in acting before, but with Imogen I saw and felt it in action and it is one of the skills I carry with me in everything I do now, from my work on the opera stage to speaking with the barista in my local cafe. I couldn’t recommend her enough!”

Patrick McGinley

Actors’ Ensemble, The Lir Academy

“I took part in an audition masterclass with Imogen in 2024. Her feedback on my monologues helped me look at them in ways I hadn’t considered before and find new choices within the pieces. The process felt like we were on the same team, working towards the same goal, which made me feel supported and encouraged me to take more risks. Imogen helped me feel much more confident in my pieces, and I’d definitely recommend her to any actor looking for constructive feedback in a supportive and encouraging environment.”

Walking into an acting class for the first time can feel daunting but not with us. Here's how it goes.

01

Arrive & settle in

Come as you are, in some comfortable clothes with a bottle of water. There's nothing to prepare and no script to learn. Just a small group of no more than twelve and a warm welcome.

02

Warm up & play

We start each session with a gentle voice and movement warm up. This is designed to shake off the day and settle any nerves.

03

Work on your feet

From there we move into some scene and text work, exploring at your own pace with guidance from Imogen. Working in pairs and as part of a group is one of the biggest gifts of these courses. With each session, your confidence will grow and you become part of an ensemble. You'll leave each session having actually acted, and people find they are dying to come back.

The Young Company is for young people aged 15 to 17, and we know that trusting us with your young person matters.
Here is how we look after them.

Our policies

A published safeguarding statement

We work to a written Child Safeguarding Statement and a Code of Behaviour, prepared in line with the Children First Act 2015 and Tusla guidance. Both set out plainly how we keep young people safe and how any concern would be handled.

Our coach

One consistent, experienced teacher

Every Young Company class is led by Imogen Doel, who has around twenty years of professional experience and teaches on the faculty of The Lir Academy. Groups are small, capped at twelve, so no young person is ever lost in the room.

Your role

Parents stay in the loop

A parent or guardian makes the application, confirms by email that the participant is under 18, and completes a short consent form before classes begin. You are welcome to contact us with any questions, at any time.

Read our Child Safeguarding Statement and Code of Behaviour in full.

Do I need any experience?
No. The Adult Company is built for all levels, including complete beginners and those returning after years away. You'll work on the fundamentals in a small, supportive group. No experience required.
Where are classes held?
At two venues in Co. Wicklow: Greystones (Greystones Presbyterian Church, Trafalgar Road) and Bray (Shoreline Leisure Bray). See the Greystones and Bray pages for full directions and parking.
How large are the groups?
Every class is capped at 12 students, so you get genuine attention and plenty of time to work on your feet.
My child is 15 to 17. How does that work?
Young adults join the Young Company. A parent or guardian makes the application, confirms the participant is under 18, and completes a short consent form before classes begin. We work to a published Child Safeguarding Statement and Code of Behaviour: see For parents: safeguarding above for how we look after young people.
I'm older, or a little nervous. Is it still for me?
Yes. Adults of every age and background train with us, many coming to acting for the first time. The studio is designed to feel safe, welcoming and unintimidating.
